Person of The Year 2012: Candy.

Every end of the year we are inundated with lists but none is as publicized as the “Person Of The Year”. There will be many discussions about this topic and they will all be useless. The musical community has spoken and that person is… CANDY.

With several songs submitted in her favor: Chromatics – Candy and Lower Dens – Candy, as well as a bonus vote from Trailer Trash Tracys – Candy Girl, it was basically a landslide. Sorry, Leigh (and Betty Wang, Leonard, Laura, Nancy, Emmylou, Ramona, Andrew, and others).

The same caucus elected Sharon Van Etten as “Artist Of The Year”, with three different songs named after guys: Leonard, Kevin, and Mike McDermott.

Don’t know if you heard, but yesterday was International Women’s Days. No one congratulated me, besides Twitter, of course. However, that doesn’t really count, as we all know everyone is just looking for an excuse to tweet. But why would they anyway? Being a woman is complete pain in the behind! I cannot think of a single pro to being a lady, except perhaps for taking special pride in seeing another woman succeeding in a man’s world.

My first ever public Spotify playlist took on this very same theme. Several months ago, I created two playlists celebrating female musicians, almost exclusively from the indie scene. Yesterday, I took the opportunity to finish the third installment that is once again mostly centered around current releases.

Ah, it’s that time of the year again. The cool air, Christmas lights, the impending fluffy white stuff that’s luriking round elsewhere… and the lists. Oh, the lists!

I’ve been keeping a Spotify playlist of random songs I’ve enjoyed listening this year. This list was at times confused with the starred playlist, so I ended up doing some trimming and merging anyway. All with the goal to reach a sweet round number - at first I was aiming for a manageable 50 song playlist but wound up with too many finalists. Sadly there’s not a single commercially available software that measures which songs stimulated the brain more than others. I’m afraid I must say this is all based on guesstimates. That’s why I enjoy cranking up the Last.FM stats. It’s all about the cold-hearted numbers.

There are also a couple of songs from albums I did not listen to that much throughout the year, so there may be songs on those albums that I will end up loving more AND let’s not forget the albums that were released late in the year that I’ve barely even listened at the moment. There are no winners, I say.

Who is Claudia Lewis?

The latest M83 album “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” was just released this week. It features a couple of songs titled after proper names, such as “Steve McQueen” and “Claudia Lewis”. Surely there’s no need to question who Steve McQueen is, but who is Claudia Lewis? Today, eMusic hosted a Q&A on Twitter where one person asked this very same question. Anthony’s answer was:

“I was surfing the web & found this website with space poems - Claudia Lewis had 3-4 space poems on this site. They were pretty bad space poems but I found it super moving, there was something very innocent about it. She’s probably super young like 12 or 14 but I don’t know her or how she looks or anything about her. I just know that she writes cheesy space poems.” [1] [2] [3]

After the Q&A was over, I immediately fired up the Google engines, as any normal person looking for excuses to procrastinate would do, and I found out a couple of very interesting things:

Claudia Louise Lewis was born on October 14, 1907 in Corvallis, Oregon. She’s still alive
She got a bachelor’s degree from Reed College in 1930, a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in 1943, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1959
Taught language arts, children’s literature, and writing for children at Bank Street College of Education in New York
She was interested in space and published the works “When I Go to the Moon” (1961) and “Poems for Earth and Space” (1967) about the subject
“Poems Of Earth And Space” (1967) was one of the earliest books of verse to highlight space
Since 1998, Bank Street College has given out the “Claudia Lewis Poetry Award” and they also named their reference research collection after her

Her poems are scarce online but I was able to find this one published as part of the “Poems Of Earth And Space” book.

Don’t know about you but I could definitely read that poem while listening to “Lower Your Eyelids to Die with the Sun”.

Spotify: A Love/Hate Sensation. Rundown of all the Pros and Cons

It’s been over a month since I signed up for Spotify and 10 days since I switched from freeloader to paying Premium customer. On paper, Spotify is a very attractive proposition, offering a great solution to the common problem of on-demand music streaming.

As a free user, you have to sit through banners and audio ads, quite a reasonable price if you consider the service you’re provided with. Right now, there are no streaming limits to free users in the US, as far as I can tell. Though, there are limits to free users in Europe. My guess is this unlimited service will continue for their introduction period and will be limited in the future.

After a mere week I was hooked! All I could think about was track order in playlists, which albums I should be checking out and searching for public playlists online. Despite my annoyances with its crippled user interface, I decided to take the jump and go for a Premium account that would provide me with the juicy benefit of having that music offline. Since then, I have discovered that their user interface deficiencies reach well into their mobile application. So I decided to list all the good and bad I’ve had to deal with my Spotify experience, hoping this might help someone out there make a well-informed decision.

Desktop App & General Service

LOVE:

Stream your choice of 15 million songs on demand! Makes it a lot easier to check out albums and diversify musical knowledge - and Last.fm library - without breaking the bank. Basically you don’t need to download from other stores unless it’s unavailable to stream from Spotify. This is both good and evil
Import Playlists from iTunes. You can import playlists at any given time from the File menu. No need to start from scratch when you sign up
Public Playlists. After obsessing over track order and selection, it would be a shame to let it go to waste
Playlist Folders. Keep all those playlists nice and tidy. You can even go bold for a playlist folder inception and create folders within folders. Your iTunes Playlist folders will be imported
Artist Radio. There’s a very limited option akin to Last.fm’s. This feature, however, is not available for all artists and it’s very barebones. There’s no tag-tuner or adding several artists. No limit on how many tracks you can skip

Inbox. Now when people recommend you music you can actually listen to it right away, unlike Last.fm
Collaborative Playlist. Invite all the people you want to help you out! Haven’t used this feature but it sounds pretty cool
Responds to keyboard media shortcuts

HATE:

No way to sort Playlists on profile. Profile playlists appear in the order they are listed by your left column. This is a good way to customize the order but it would be a lot more helpful if it included a drop down to sort by date added, recently updated or alphabetically

No new Playlist notifications. What’s the point of adding people to your list if you have to go each one of their profiles to see if they’ve added any new playlists? What a nightmare! And if you consider my previous hate point, you’d better scroll all the way down on those profile. Who knows where those new playlists might be!
Extremely limited Playlist info. Duration is only calculated in terms of “hours”. Sometimes a short description goes a long way
Impossible to find Playlists. You have to rely on third party sites for that. Personally, I’ve been using ShareMyPlaylists.com It’s fairly decent
Can’t export Playlist. Here’s a trick: select the tracks in the playlist and drag it to a Rich Text document, like Word, OpenOffice or Text Edit. It must be Rich Text, otherwise it will only copy the Spotify track link. The Rich Text document will have the “Artist - Track” with a link to Spotify. You can simply remove formatting or convert the document to plain text
No drop down search filters. There are certain tricks you can use to limit your search. It would be a whole lot easier if they included an “Advanced Search” and a drop down for main options.

Advanced search syntax:
artist:”artist name”
album:”album name”
track:”track title”
year:”yyyy” or “yyyy-yyyy”
label:”label name”

You can combine these terms with AND, OR, and NOT. Or simply use a “+” instead of “AND”, or a “-” instead of “NOT”. More search filters: http://www.spotify.com/us/about/features/advanced-search-syntax/
No notifications when people add you to their list
No clear marker of unavailable tracks. Sometimes it shows the album link in a muted gray but it’s kind of confusing. Some tracks may not be available from the full-length album you have in your local drive, but could be available from a single or compilation

No way of knowing when a track is pulled from Spotify by record labels. If such thing happens, it will simply disappear from your playlists. Though It will reappear if you later download it from another store. You have to notice that it is gone first
Gracenote track matching is not 100% accurate. Spotify uses Gracenote to search its database for an equivalent of your local songs. I’ve found myself replacing all the tracks from an album that it’s tagged in the exact same way as my local album, yet it still won’t recognize it. This is a rare occurrence, though
No volume normalizing or crossfade. However, there is a fade in for skipping or resuming track playback

Premium Account Privileges

LOVE:

Unlimited plays without banners or audio ads. You can also get this at half-price with the Unlimited package
Offline playlists. No need to depend on an internet connection to listen to your playlists. Simply go to the playlist and turn on the “Available Offline” option to copy those tracks to your computer and device. There’s a limit though! 3,333 tracks

HATE:

Say goodbye to iTunes. Not because of how great Spotify is, though. You can’t no longer use iTunes to sync music, movies, tv shows or audiobooks. I wouldn’t have a problem with this if Spotify were as advanced and feature-rich as iTunes. It simply isn’t
All tracks are synced to your mobile device with WiFi. Forget about having all of that vast music collection you’ve spent years building. Unless you have a week to sync 10,000 songs, that is. The process basically consists of downloading all your songs all over again. Why can’t we sync local songs via USB cable? Actually, we should be able to sync all the songs with USB, considering Spotify downloads all the tracks in Offline playlists to your computer first
No way to force Offline on desktop. You cannot use Offline mode in your desktop app unless there’s no internet connection. If you would like to take it offline to make another online activity faster, you are screwed

Mobile App

LOVE:

Play Spotify music while Offline. Basically the reason I signed up for Premium
Ability to edit playlist. You can change track order, add or delete tracks from playlists. Spotify will then wave its magic sync wand and apply all of your changes to your desktop app next time both are connected to the same WiFi network

Resume where you left off if your app crashes. Application feels pretty stable and has only crashed once in a week of 5-hour a day usage. When I reopened, it resumed with the last track at about 10 or 15 seconds before its last playback time

HATE:

No Offline artist browser. Sometimes you just wanna go an an artist binge! Mobile app deprives you of this (sometimes unhealthy) desire. If you’d like to do so, you would have to create a new playlist then proceed to browse all of those playlist and add the tracks one-by-one. Oh, that brings me to my next point….
Can’t add tracks to playlists unless they’re currently being played. No tap and hold to add tracks to a playlist “on-the-go” and no option to add tracks to new playlist while in edit mode

Search is not functional Offline. If you try to search a particular song or artists, it will only return the local tracks while ignoring the ones you synced from Spotify. Also, there’s no way to switch to the albums or artists tabs in the search screen

Hmmm… Where are all the other songs?

Can’t sort playlists tracks. Let’s say you’d like a particular playlist to be feature by date added in descending order. This is pretty easy to do in the desktop app, unfortunately that is not synced to mobile, neither is there an option to do so while using the app. Same as iPod software, I know, but at least the iPod playlists remember the sorting order I was using in iTunes
No play queue information. So, how many tracks are there left on this playlist that I’m currently listening on shuffle? No need to know that! Learn to live in the moment
No way to hide online playlists while in Offline mode

Look at all that clutter

Some album arts are not displayed while Offline. This is completely random. Some tracks show the cover art, others don’t. At first I thought it was for “local tracks”, since then I’ve noticed the cover missing on Spotify tracks. Instead you’ll get to stare at the empty CD case image that’s sure to make the most out of that big, fancy touch screen on your device

LOVE:

Spotify has built-in scrobble support. Simply save your username and password under “Preferences” for desktop app or “Setttings” for mobile app

HATE:

Tracks played on mobile app while in Offline mode might or might not get scrobbled. It’s supposed to work next time you sync with your desktop app. Emphasis on “supposed”. Worked the very first time, since then it’s been a complete nightmare for me. I’ve been doing some experiments to try and determine what causes the app to skip scrobble. These are my findings:

Scrobbles:

Tracks played offline scrobble with next track played while online

Won’t Scrobble:

If you sync your mobile device with desktop
If you quit the app on the device

Right now, my dilemma is: are the love points strong enough to make me overcome the hate points? I’m honestly not sure at the moment.

Watched the Pixar/Disney movie Cars last night and got some mixed feelings. It was alright, I guess, but it left me a bit confused. What happens when two cars “hook up”? Where do Cars come from? Do they send a letter to the big Stork in Detroit? Who handles the requests? I can’t condone a society with such limited advancement opportunity. If you’re made a tow truck, that’s what you’ll be all your life.

Blue Valentine: Easy to understand why Michelle Williams’ character fell for Ryan Gosling’s. Unclear on exact reason they fell out of love. Her character wasn’t into marriage to begin with. Easier to be disillusioned by trading her dreams. Drinking husband not help. In the end, I think he was in love with her. She was just smitten, not in love; didn’t have choice but to marry, basically.

“Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead” good 3am insomnia movie but lacking real kick. The way the story unfolds is a bit predictable…. and it is yet another movie where Marisa Tomei was casted for a completely unsuitable role and Ethan Hawke phoned it in big time. Alfred Finney and Philip Seymour Hoffman were great, as usual, but Ethan Hawke left me rather cold. Acting definitely saves movie!

So, Toy Story 3 was pretty good. The story is a little bit too dark for actual kids but it was fun. Not as good as Up/Wall-E. Sorry!
