Hey Girls. I made a mixtape to celebrate you

W, I also made a gallery on Flickr.
Don’t know if you heard, but yesterday was International Women’s Days. No one congratulated me, besides Twitter, of course. However, that doesn’t really count, as we all know everyone is just looking for an excuse to tweet. But why would they anyway? Being a woman is complete pain in the behind! I cannot think of a single pro to being a lady, except perhaps for taking special pride in seeing another woman succeeding in a man’s world.
My first ever public Spotify playlist took on this very same theme. Several months ago, I created two playlists celebrating female musicians, almost exclusively from the indie scene. Yesterday, I took the opportunity to finish the third installment that is once again mostly centered around current releases.

Spotify playlist: 100 songs from 2011

Ah, it’s that time of the year again. The cool air, Christmas lights, the impending fluffy white stuff that’s luriking round elsewhere… and the lists. Oh, the lists!

I’ve been keeping a Spotify playlist of random songs I’ve enjoyed listening this year. This list was at times confused with the starred playlist, so I ended up doing some trimming and merging anyway. All with the goal to reach a sweet round number - at first I was aiming for a manageable 50 song playlist but wound up with too many finalists. Sadly there’s not a single commercially available software that measures which songs stimulated the brain more than others. I’m afraid I must say this is all based on guesstimates. That’s why I enjoy cranking up the Last.FM stats. It’s all about the cold-hearted numbers.

There are also a couple of songs from albums I did not listen to that much throughout the year, so there may be songs on those albums that I will end up loving more AND let’s not forget the albums that were released late in the year that I’ve barely even listened at the moment. There are no winners, I say.

[ Spotify Playlist ]

Anyway, I look forward to listening to other playlists!

Oh, Baby: The Mixtape

“Baby” is a very popular, non-gender specific, way of referring to your significant other. It is a wonder-word in terms of phonetic camouflage, it can be included in a myriad of music genres without losing a step. Its pop sensibility is so high, that it can even be used by closeted gay people without fear of outing themselves to anyone. “Baby”: sweet and short.

While crushing very hard on the latest addition to the Baby Hall of Fame - Baby by Warpaint- it dawned on me that it’d probably be a good topic for a mixtape. Now, don’t be fooled by its sweetness, not all babies are good-natured. Some of them are deceiving, backstabbing, selfish, evil spawns. So, I decided to give a premature, one-sided account on the state of mind of each one of these precious babies to provide extra rant value.

You can either listen to the songs on Blip.fm or skip to the end and download them all to share with your baby.

Oh, how I worry. Please, baby, hurry.
Come back, come back, come back to me right now […]
You go, I hope maybe I’ll be fine. I walk a steady line.
Never again will I make somebody mine”
Born Ruffians– Come Back
[ Listen ]

Baby’s Mood:
Heartbroken, yet holding ground to save pride

“My baby cried all night long. He saw me dancing with a boy named Joe.
A hug and then a kiss and with the lights down low […]
He saw me messing with a boy named Lou. And baby can’t do what Lou can do”
Nancy Sinatra – My Baby Cried All Night Long
[ Listen ]

Baby’s Mood:
Sad and betrayed (Keep this song in mind next time you listen to Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down))

“Oh baby love, my baby love, I need you. Oh, how I need you.
But all you do is treat me bad. Break my heart and leave me sad.
Tell me, what did I do wrong to make you stay away so long”
The Supremes – Baby Love
[ Listen ]

Baby’s Effect on Mood:
Unhappy in love

“Pretty little baby, you say that maybe you’ll be thinking of me and try to love me.
Pretty little baby, I’m hoping that you do”
Connie Francis – Pretty Little Baby
[ Listen ]

Baby’s Mood:
Teasing about being in love

“The night we met I knew I needed you so and if I had the chance I’d never let you go.
So won’t you say you love me I’ll make you so proud of me.
We’ll make ‘em turn their heads every place we go.
So won’t you please be my little baby”
The Ronettes – Be My Baby
[ Listen ]

Baby’s Mood:
Madly in love

“Oh, oh, baby, I want you to know how good it feels to be with you, but I’ll never let it show. Because the moment that I tell you, you turn right around and then I’ll never see you again as my heart’s pulled out”
Best Coast – Feeling Of Love

[ Listen ]

Baby’s Mood:
In love, but insecure about rejection

“The way that you love me. The way that you touch me.
The way that you whisper my name. I cannot resist you each time I kiss you
Then everything goes up in flames. Baby I’m burnin’ ”
Dolly Parton – Baby I’m Burnin’

[ Listen ]

Baby’s Mood:
In love and lovin’ it

“It’s not the way you smile that touched my heart.
It’s not the way you kissed that tears me apart.
Many, many, many nights go by. I sit alone at home and cry over you. What can I do?
Don’t want nobody, nobody, ‘cause, baby, it’s you.”
Smith – Baby It’s You (The Shirelles Cover)
[ Listen ]

Baby’s Mood:
Madly in love

“I can’t quit you babe. I think I’m gonna put you down for a while.
I said you messed up my happy home. Made me mistreat my only child
You built my hopes so high, baby Then you let me down so low”
Led Zeppelin – I Can’t Quit You Baby
[ Listen ]

Baby’s Effect on Mood:
Mad and reluctantly heartbroken

“Bye-bye, baby, bye-bye. So long, my honey, so long.
Too bad you had to drift away ‘cause I could use some company right here on this road, on this road I’m on today”
Janis Joplin – Bye, Bye Baby
[ Listen ]

Baby’s Effect on Mood:
Heartbroken, depressed and lonely

“Well, it’s been building up inside of me for, oh, I don’t know how long.

B ut she looks in my eyes and makes me realize and she says “Don’t worry baby””
The Beach Boys – Don’t Worry Baby
[ Listen ]

Baby’s Mood:
Supportive and in love

“Everywhere I look I see downs ‘cause hate is always black

It’s down at the end of lonely street at Heartbreak Hotel.
You make me so lonely, baby. I get so lonely, I get so lonely I could die”
Elvis Presley – Heartbreak Hotel

[ Listen ]

Baby’s Effect on Mood:
Heartbroken, depressed and lonely

“You say you’re looking for someone never weak but always strong.
To protect you and defend you, whether you are right or wrong.
Someone to open each and every door
But it ain’t me, babe. No, no, no, it ain’t me, babe It ain’t me you’re lookin’ for, babe”
Bob Dylan – It Ain’t Me Babe
[ Listen ]

Baby’s Mood:
In search of love and full of demands

“There goes my baby. Moving on down the line
I wonder where, I wonder where she is now
I broke her heart and I made her cry
Now I’m all alone, I’m all alone. What should I do”
The Walkmen – There Goes My Baby (The Drifters Cover)
[ Listen ]

All we’ve gotta do is be brave and be kind”

[ Download a mixtape for your baby ]

Oh, Baby! We live in the 90s

Due to lack of 90s songs in original mixtape, I now present a 90s appendix.

“Baby, baby, baby yeah!
She abused me for no apparent reason!
She confused my hopes for a blistered lesion”
Pavement - Baby Yeah (Live)

Baby’s Effect on Mood:
Flabbergasted by Baby’s evil tendencies

“You’re so pretty. Not to talk to you would be a crime.
Let me put my arms around you
Just wanna use up a little of your time
Baby baby baby, won’t you be my girl”
R.E.M. f/ Mike Mills - Baby Baby (The Vibrators Cover)

Baby’s Effect on Mood:
Madly in love

“In the midnight moonlight I’ll be walking a long and lonely mile
And every time I do, I keep seeing this picture of you
Here comes my baby, here she comes now
And it can come as no surprise to me, with another guy”
Yo La Tengo - Here Comes My Baby (Cat Stevens Cover)

Baby’s Effect on Mood:
Resigned to the loss

“Oh where, oh where can my baby be
The Lord took her away from me
She’s gone to heaven so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world”
Pearl Jam - Last Kiss (J. Frank Wilson cover)

Baby’s Mood:
Sad, but at peace in heaven

“Baby did a bad, bad thing
You ever love someone so much you thought your little heart was gonna break in two?
I didn’t think so
You ever tried with all your heart and soul to get your lover back to you?
I wanna hope so”
Chris Isaak - Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing

Baby’s Effect on Mood:
Heartbroken and with bags under his eyes due to lack of sleep for thinking about what Baby did
